Matt McCarthy
Matt McCarthy (b. 1980, United States) is a collage artist best known for using house cats as his primary subject matter. His work combines found images into uncannily realistic pictures that shock and delight. The utilization of existing cat images reinforces the timeless appeal of felines, and draws a common thread through a variety of media and reference material. McCarthyโs pieces are created using both analog and physical tools. Whether scissors and glue or Photoshop, McCarthy believes in the value and meditative properties of creating artwork by hand.
His work has been featured widely in print and online, shown at the National Collage Society among other exhibitions, and belongs in many private collections including the Doug & Laurie Kanyer Art Collection. His first major solo show, MAGNUS CATTUS, took place at the Cary Arts Center in Cary, NC in June 2022.
Matt lives in Chapel Hill, NC with his senior black cat, Atticus, and his wife, the writer Katherine Cox. As a screenwriting team, Katherine and Mattโs work has been recognized as finalists at the Austin Film Festival, Screencraft Horror, and Killer Shorts competitions among others.
